It is well known that literary translation requires specific study and translation strategies. In this sense, one of the most relevant characteristics to bear in mind shall be the narrative level. This consists of the strategies which the author sets out to transform a story into a literary work. Taking into account the recent developments in narratology, we deal with the problem of indirect speech unraveling the difficulties found when translating in the pair German-Spanish languages. With this purpose, we analyze not only their formal but also their grammatical dimensions, emphasizing the important semantic implications which flow at the narrative level from these grammatical dimensions in both languages. Finally, we focus on some fragments of the novel Die Blendung by Elias Canetti and its translation into Spanish, highlighting where the translation strategy has failed.
