This article examines the transformation of the classical theme of the epic in the works of Fernando Pessoa and Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, in dialogue with certain observations made by Cleonice Berardinelli regarding Os Lusíadas by Luís de Camões and Mensagem by Fernando Pessoa. Epic poems traditionally associate literature with a battlefield; however, the article seeks to emphasize that Pessoa introduces an entirely distinct perspective in Mensagem, which could be described as anti-epic, since it values characters whose historical importance is minimal. The study further explores the influence of this often-overlooked aspect of Mensagem on modern poets, such as Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, who reinterprets epic narratives to dissociate them from colonial ideologies. In summary, the article highlights a new approach to national mythology through poetry since Pessoa, contrasting it with Camões' classical epic style.
