Water is an indispensable element of human life. However, it must present a standard of potability to meet all the needs of living things. The disposal of domestic and industrial effluents in rivers is one of the main responsible for the contamination of water by non-degradable organic compounds such as metals. The present work aims to evaluate physical chemical characteristics and the presence and concentration of metals in the section of Rio Grande, investigating the sewage treatment plant as a possible source of contamination. The collection of water samples from Rio Grande was carried out in the segment between the sewage treatment plant at Barreiras-Ba, and the samples were collected in two seasonal periods (dry and rainy). It was monitored the physical-chemical parameters (TDS, conductivity, pH and salinity), metals (Al, Ba, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Si and Zn) and the anions (F-, Cl-, NO3-, PO43- and SO42-). During the study period, it was possible to verify that there was no variation of TDS values, pH, conductivity and salinity and that the same was observed with the analyzed metals. Regarding the physical-chemical parameters and metals analyzed in this study, the results showed within the limit established by the CONAMA resolution nº 357/2005.
