Abstract

Active restoration of croplands more strongly enhances soil carbon relative to natural regeneration in carbon-poor soils and topsoil layers, while natural regeneration performs better in carbon-rich soils and subsoil layers, suggests a large-scale paired comparison of two restoration strategies.
