THE EDUCATION OF JAVA CHARACTERS IN SERAT WASITAWALA

Abstract

There are abundant Java scripts in the archipelago. One of the interesting Javanese manuscripts reviewed is Serat Wasitawala with genre of piwulang. It contains character values that are expected to be the source of the curriculum enrichment of 2013 that puts the values of the characters as a priority. Using the method of philology and hermeneutics, this research is hoped to reveal the text content and educational values in Serat Wasitawala, along with the context of writing and its relevance to nowadays education. Serat Wasitawala written by Mas Demang Warsopradongga contained educational values that could represent the concept of Islamic education of Java in the past. Content of Serat Wasitawala was in general form of life doctrine both related to God and related to human beings. The values of character education reflected in it were as follows; To wonder, to love science, to think logically, critically, creatively, and innovatively; Religius; Honest; Responsible; Disciplined, Hard work, Confident boundaries; Polite; Nationalist; and To appreciate diversity. The issues of education that are integral and contextual with the present are about character education/morals, professional teachers, and educational philosophy aimed at seeking perfection of life.
