This article talks about the Indianism roots and the issues of Brazilian National Identity through analysis of by two works of Gonçalves Dias: Meditação and Os Timbiras. In the prose-poem the poet blurts the social reality and the political problems of the Brazil Empire; already in the epopee he reproduces one European and multifaceted ideal about the beginning of the nation.
