We explore the main historical paradigms of origins of sociology of law. We provide an analytical review of sociological and legal theories in the Western legal, psychological and sociological thought. In the article, we show the author's position concerning time of occurrence of the sociology of law as a scientific field. As a basis, serve the works of the German school of law, which form the philosophical foundations of the German sociological tradition. In the context of the development of scientific paradigm, we explore the role of the French school of ethnological sociology in ethnological science, whose ideas were thoroughly imbued with the ideas of institutionalism with elements of psychology. We show the practical contribution of the American school of sociology of law, who paid much attention to the analysis of judicial activity, which allowed first to establish a pragmatic and then a realistic direction later in the sociology of law. We also show the role of the sociology of law schools in the Scandinavian countries, whose merit was bringing a realistic concept of the right to a logical conclusion. We mention the contribution of Polish scientists to the international coordination and cooperation among the various schools of sociology of law.
