Abstract

[How to do things with Vico (and why). About the vitality of the New Sciencelinguistic thought]. This article explores the relationship between two main issues in Vico’s philosophy: on the one hand plurisemiotism, i.e. the genetic and functional aspect of human symbolic activities and, on the other hand, political antagonism opposing upper and lower classes in human societies. The analysis focuses on the inner tensions in Vico’s conception about body and mind and their mutual relations and argues that his reflection on language has an ethical and pedagogical dimension, which deeply affected the contemporary evolution of Italian society. I refer in particular to the radical legislative process (unique in Europe) which transformed educational institutions since the end of the 1960s.
