The analysis of the successive laws related to archaeology and museum inventories promulgated by the canton of Neuchâtel enables us to propose an assessment of the status of the archaeological objects between 1870 and 1940: scientific objects, heritage artefacts. We have found that the first bills aimed at determining the treatment of objects through a particular legal status. It could also be stated that the sharing of the archaeological remains stemming from an excavation in equal parts (between the archaeologists and the museums) followed standard practices and was not mentioned in the law.
