Abstract
Intellectual and literary circles, communities, and networks formed a significant feature of Renaissance and early modern literary culture, playing thus a crucial part in nurturing intellectual communication and the circulation of knowledge. My contribution here is focused on the particular intellectual network into which Sidneys entered. A tour of the continent was a rite of passage for any aspirant of the day seeking to learn about foreign lands and languages, establish social and political contacts, and extract politically important information. Motivated by such pursuits, brothers Philip and Robert Sidney set out on tour. Here, I will focus on key representative of the Polish intellectual tradition Andreas Dudith and the Hungarian/Slovak and prominent figure of the Viennese court Johannes Sambucus. Taking their involvement with the Sidneys as an essential framework for my analysis, I will explore their role in their European intellectual circle.
