Come guardare ai classici e vivere felici: “The Artist”, "Hugo", "War Horse"
Abstract
The recent success of films such as The Artist by Michel Hazanavicius, Hugo by Martin Scorsese and War Horse by Steven Spielberg shows a renewed interest in the history of cinema, from its origins to the classical period. Ever easier to identify in our digital era when film enjoys a virtual existence, this trend confirms how narrative articulations and audience practices have largely remained unchanged, despite the extraordinarily wide-ranging transformations which have recently affected the medium. The study of quotation in these three films not only allows us to grasp how they work and interact with the texts and contexts they refer to, but above all to evaluate the effective result of the metatextual discourses formulated by their authors.
