doi: 10.12957/geouerj.2016.23485 The analysis of current changes in the countryside becomes crucial. Besides both performing traditional functions as provider of urban workforce and raw materials and consuming goods from the city, the countryside becomes more and more a place for non agricultural activities such as industrial manufacturing and services related to tourism that make it natural features stand out. The state of Rio de Janeiro, the territory of which is marked by an intense urbanization process, exemplifies these changes intensely. This work aimed to understand how the permanence of traditional elements and the presence of modern ones affect the process of commercializing the agricultural output and how the most modern sectors of agricultural production absorbs the output and surpluses from traditional farmers. Results allow understanding continuities and changes in Rio de Janeiro agriculture as converging elements.
