This contribution aims to outline the main consequences that First World War produced at European level. The author’s wish was to maintain analytical space only in this historical area because Europe represents the cradle of culture and civilization that has produced modernity. Moreover, the two major world conflicts of the last century have caused major global changes. In the first part are briefly presented the changes that the Great War had forcefully imposed on the most intimate aspects of European societies, the major geopolitical changes, the sources of the future global conflict and, above all, the emergence of authoritarian and totalitarian ideologies. The second part was reserved for the description of the fundamental elements underlying the thematic contributions of this issue of the journal Polis. The desire of the coordinator of this issue was to invite a number of senior specialists who, during the decades of research, have brought relevant information for national history. It was a conscious choice, given that we wanted to publish historical texts from the field of fundamental research.
