STUDYING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIAL INTELLECT AND COPING STRATEGIES (BY THE EXAMPLE OF GROUPS WITH DIFFERENT LEVELS OF SOCIAL INTELLECT)
Abstract
Relevance. The interrelation between coping strategies and social intellect is now a problem. Few research efforts are devoted to this linkage, and the results of these investigations are contradictory. Goal. To study the relationship between social intellect and coping strategies in groups with different levels of social intellect development. Materials and methods. The empirical base of the study consisted of 17–18-aged male and female students. G. Guilford & O’Sullivan measure of social intelligence and E. Heim psychological diagnostics of coping mechanisms were used. Results. The relationship between social intellect and coping strategies in students has been established. The subjects with a low level of social intellect prefer maladaptive coping strategies such as “active avoidance”, “self-accusation”, “aggressiveness”, “disregarding”. The respondents with an average level of intellect mainly choose adaptive and relatively adaptive coping strategies including “relativity” (“it might have been worse”), “constructive activity”, “problem analysis”, “keeping self-control”. The students with a high level of social intellect more often tend to adaptive coping strategies: “problem analysis”, “keeping self-control”, and “withdrawal”. Areas of the results’ application. The results of the study can be used in counseling and vocational guidance work with the youth as well as for designing corrective treatment and trainings.
