Conference Report: Discourse and Space. Human Geography Summer School

Abstract

In the summer of 2010, the "Discourse Theory in Human Geography" working group organized a summer school entitled "Discourse and Space" at the Institute of Geography, Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany. The aim was to provide an introduction to space-oriented discourse theory and its empirical implementation in current research designs for young researchers and students of Geography and associated research fields. After defining certain central concepts in discourse theory, several lecture modules focusing on theory and methodology were delivered. The modules "Laclau and Mouffe," "Discourse Analysis as Analysis of Society," and "Governmentality" addressed theoretical concepts, whilst the modules "Lexicometrics," "Argumentation and Declaration Analysis," "Performativity," and "Coding Techniques" provided examples of empirical research. The summer school imparted primarily theoretical and empirical strengths and potential research directions in discourse analysis for the fields of human geography and social sciences in a spatial context.
