This work is a study of heavy metals and the potential risk they may pose to the health of humans and animals, including the food chain. In order to contribute to knowledge and lay foundation on the situation of these pollutants in our environment. Undoubtedly the mining, pollution of soil, water, plants and animals on behalf of industrialization, fertilizers, chemical insecticides and other activities for the development of modern societies have led to an inordinate increase of heavy metals: mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), among others, and as a direct result of pollution. Furthermore it added to factors such as climate change, the greenhouse effect, deforestation, loss of natural resources in flora and fauna have increased the threat of heavy metals in nature. The aim is to examine the heavy metal as its source, distribution, general purposes and major alterations on the environment, also affecting human and animal health. To promote greater awareness and research on the subject, which may lead to reduced risks of heavy metals in ecosystems.
