The effect of concha bullosa of the unilateral inferior turbinate: CT evaluation
Abstract
Objectives:The most common anatomic variations of nasal septum deviation, the second most common Concha Bullosa (CB) are seen on the nose. CB is the most common anatomic variation of the osteomeatal region. CB is often together with osteomeatal complex pathology. Septum, osteomeatal complex and infection investigated its relationship with CB, but are unknown in the developmental effects of inferior turbinate. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the unilateral CB objectively the effect of the inferior turbinate. Methods:Haseki Education and Research Hospital during 1st ENT outpatient clinic and among the investigated patients with unilateral CB Study group was created. A total of 43 patients were included in this study. Consisted of 23 male and 20 female patients. The mean age of 29.4 (19-46), respectively. Study group of patients have with unilateral CB, control group have contra lateral side. Coronal paranasal sinus computed tomography in patients CB of front, middle and posterior sections in cross-sectional plane and at the same level of control measurements were made. The angle and the distance between the inferior turbinate bone and the lateral wall of the nasal fossa were measured on the coronal plane anterior posteriorly at tree (Front, middle and posterior) different anatomic levels. Statistically differences between the two groups were compared. Results:The two groups had no significant differences in age and gender. CB of front, middle and posterior parts of the cross-sectional plane, compared to the inferior turbinate much significantly lower than the control group (p<0.0001). Inferior turbinate bone with the maximum distance between the sinus wall in CB were much lower compared to the control side (p<0.0001).Conclusion:In our study, unilateral CB of the inferior turbinate is shown to affect the angle of the lateral wall other than by showing a very significant reduction in nasal volume. At the same time the inferior turbinate side of the CB, the maxillary sinus wall, the distance is less than the control side.
