The SciELO network (Scientific Electronic Library Online): perspective after 20 years of operation
Abstract
The article traces the almost twenty years of history of the SciELO Network and the Spanish Website of SciELO España. The model was developed by the Latin American and Caribbean Center for Collaborative Health Sciences Information (Bireme/PAHO/WHO), and specially realized to respond to the needs of scientific communication in the developing countries and particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean. SciELO offers visibility and universal access, contributing thus to the overcoming of the phenomenon known as ‘lost science’, and, at the same time, promoting the improvement of the quality of their magazines.
