CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE FMVZ-UADY TO THE KNOWLEDGE ON FEEDING PIGS, POULTRY AND RABBITS WITH TROPICAL RESOURCES
Abstract
Background. In the Yucatan peninsula there are a large number of floristic resources that can be used in the feeding of monogastric in either intensive or alternative systems that also seek for animal welfare. Objective. To review the information that has been published in scientific journals about the research on monogastric feeding systems in the FMVZ-UADY. Methodology. A compilation was made of the published works on feeding systems of pigs, poultry and rabbits. Publications in scientific journals were considered, where researchers and students of the FMVZ-UADY participated. Main findings. Forty scientific articles were reviewed, of which 10 were about pigs, 26 about poultry and 4 about rabbits. Implications. The information that has been published in recent years has contributed to the knowledge about tropical floristic resources with nutritional potential for monogastric animals, which facilitate their incorporation into poultry, pig and rabbit production systems. Conclusions. The floristic resources available in the region have limitations for their use in monogastric animals due to their fiber content and anti-nutritional factors, however, in the FMVZ-UADY processes, treatments and feed management have been developed that allow their use at acceptable and safe levels, without affecting the productive behavior of the animals.
