Mehe: un apellido vasco escrito en aljamía hebraico-navarra

Abstract

Este artículo llama la atención sobre un interesante testimonio de la aspi - ración de la H intervocálica en euskera en la Edad Media. Testimonio que proviene de una lengua totalmente ajena: el hebreo. En dos manuscritos del siglo XIV se encuentra a dos judíos apellidados Mehe y dicho apellido aparece escrito con caracteres hebraicos. En ambos casos el judío que escribe el documento refleja la H de Mehe con la letra hei del alfabeto hebreo. En su origen y con toda probabilidad en tiempos medievales esta letra hebrea se pronunciaba como una consonante aspirada según los testimonios que nos quedan de dicho periodo. This article examines an interesting testimony of the aspiration of Basque intervocalic H in medieval times provided from a totally different language: Hebrew. In two manuscripts from XIV century the Basque surname Mehe appears written in Hebrew characters; in both cases it is the hei the Hebrew script used to transliterate the H. The sound of the hei had a feeble aspiration in origin and with all probability also in the Middle Ages according to the testimonies preserved from that period regarding Hebrew phonetics.
