NEGATIVE MEANINGS IN TURKISH PROVERBS AND IDIOMS / TÜRK ATASÖZLERİ VE DEYİMLERİNDE KÖTÜLEME İFADELERİ**
Abstract
Proverbs and idioms are based on long experience and observations, which became the property of the people. These words have been adopted and developed by people. Meanwhile proverbs reflect the value judgment, cultural characteristics of the people. Along with all the features in the idioms and proverbs there are words that contradict value judgment, “proverbs negative character” expressing thoughts not accepted by all members of society, or the meaning of defamatory, degrading certain nation, object, animal. But the features of proverbs are well-known and by taking into account these features, you can understand that many proverbs that are considered negative, actually are not true proverbs, or do not have negative values, along with it, and in using them, and in the perception and evaluation of idioms and proverbs sometimes formed similar concepts. Since proverbs and idioms express lifestyle, behavior, and faith of the people, those who are trying to understand the values of a particular society on the basis of these words, make negative conclusions about national identity and the people subjected to unfair criticism, since they do not take into consideration the features of proverbs and idioms. In this study, the difference between idioms and proverb will be considered in the context of semantics, will be processed the bad values of written, oral and electronic sources; results will be sorted by category. Based on this classification it will be withdrawn cultural values of the society as well be considered a cultural link between proverbs, sayings and culture
