Abstract

The paper deals with the question of religious pluralism in the example of the Book of Jonah. By his universal concept of salvation, the author of this Old Testament book, which emerged in the post-exile era, stands opposite the particularism of Ezra and Nehemiah. Of particular importance in the text of the book is the name of God ‟the God of heaven”, which means that He is universal and supra-national. In the Christian exegesis, the Book of Jonah often served as the basis of anti-Jewish interpretations. Jonah is portrayed as a typical Jew. Contemporary Christian theology should find a model of relations with its own anti-Judaic heritage and offer an interpretation of the Book of Jonah which will be acceptable in a religious pluralistic context.
