this is bibliographic research which aimed to identify the profile of Brazilian nursing research which used the method of Ethnography with emphasis on care. The methodology was based on investigating the databank BDENF, using the keywords ethnography, nursing and care. Twenty publications from between 1998 and 2010 were analyzed. There were approximately two publications a year and the majority of the investigations were related to the life cycle or clinical conditions in specific groups, besides portraying the interaction of the nurse with the individual or family. The places where the studies were made also varied, but all studies had a collective perspective; for data collection, different techniques were used simultaneously, principally participant observation. The studies were developed in various areas of knowledge, particularly Obstetric Nursing, and valued relationships of care and caring.
