This article explores the social and cultural history of sound and its meaning in a major port city. In Hamburg, Germany’s principal port, the sounds and sirens of vessels – sometimes characterised as ‘gorgeous noise’ – emotionally attached local people to their city. The sounds and sights of the Hamburg harbour deeply impressed foreigners, fuelling their imagination of ‘exotic’ parts of the earth. From the early twentieth century, the mass media popularised the acoustic landscape of maritime Hamburg. The ‘Hamburg Harbour Concert’, for example, a live radio show, was broadcast from 1929 onwards and captured the sounds of the port alongside live music. Many films about Hamburg implemented the maritime soundscape and created an audio-visual experience. Although the economic and social relevance of the port has changed since the late 1960s, maritime sounds and images of Hamburg continue to be produced today.
