During the Colonial centuries, the "grana cochinilla", an insect providing red dye, was cultivated in Oaxaca and created great richess, even though no important mines were exploited in the area. By the XIX century, a technological innovation, the discovery of artificial anilines, ended that activity and Oaxaca became the poor region it is nowadays.
