Oral cancer in patients of the province of Las Tunas, a 7-year study
Abstract
Background: oral cancer has become a worldwide health problem, mostly in underdeveloped countries and in certain geographic areas where the incidence and mortality rate are particularly high.Objective: to describe the morbidity in the population suffering from oral cancer in Las Tunas, from 2010 to 2016.Methods: a retrospective, descriptive study was carried out with a universe of 181 patients diagnosed with oral cancer in the province during the period herein declared. The information was gathered by means of the cancer provincial register. The following variables were measured: diagnosis year, age, anatomical location, histological diagnosis and clinical status of the tumor. The data were processed according to descriptive statistics.Results: there was a considerable increase in the number of patients diagnosed with oral cancer, mostly from 2014 to 2016. The 50 to 79 age group (70,2 %) prevailed. The tonsils were the most affected site according to the location of the tumor. Epidermoid carcinomas were more frequent (78,5 %) and 37,6 % of the patients were diagnosed in the stage 1 of the disease.Conclusions: the study described the morbidity of the patients with oral cancer in the province, showing an increase in the disease.
