Les affects dans le Bellum adversus Granatenses d’Alfonso de Palencia

Abstract

The present article examines the affects of and caused by the royal couple formed by Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon in Bellum adversus Granatenses by Alfonso de Palencia. First, it shows how the discourse on royal affects—desire, hope, sadness, anger—aims to legitimate their initiative of reconquest of the Kingdom of Granada and to highlight the cohesion of Christian society around the sovereigns. Next, the article analyses how the Christians base their military strategy on the fear felt by the besieged populations, and the ways in which the text captures the negative or—more rarely —positive affects ascribed to the Muslims to justify the Christian war and victory.
