The article is devoted to the role of the image-symbol of a bird in "Notes from the Dead House" by F.M. Dostoevsky — a tragic story of convicts in Omsk prison. The image of a bird is symbolic and mainly expresses the fragile dream of prisoners about freedom. The eagle, which is repeatedly found in the text, in particular in the chapter “Akulkin’s husband”, is especially significant in the aspect of freedom.
