Hospital infections or nosocomial infections (Greek: Nosus means disease, and Komeion means taking care of) are all those infectionsacquired by hospitalized patients, other than the cause for which they werehospitalized, and undergoing treatment. Infections which occur after 48 hours of admission, or acquired within three days after being discharged, and within a month after undergoing a surgical procedure are called as hospital infections. These infections are also called as hospital acquired infections or health-care associated infections (HAI). HAI’s contribute to severe morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients.
