The immediate periurban of the city are often seen as a nebula undefined. The large number of terms relating thereto (suburban, suburb, suburbs, suburban, rurban ...) show the difficulty to determining a concept space. How the study of the surrounding cities of medieval and modern times can help to understand the problem that interests researchers from many disciplines (historians and archaeologists, but also planners, geographers and sociologists)? It is to replace the current city in a dynamic evolution. The current city (and its surroundings) is the heir, in its forms, the city (and its surroundings) medieval, understanding the past helps to understand the current status. It is not only an inventory of past structures but to identify an organization and evolution where the current city finds its place process. Without necessarily solve this problem, this article propose avenues of research and present the outskirts of the medieval period as a field of experience tools that could be applied to the present time.
