The aim of the research. The article aims to analyze the manuscript of the unpublished bibliographic index “Ukrainian Soviet Literary Studies and Criticism. Ukrainian Soviet Literature. 1917-1970” (Kyiv, 1973), which had been prepared for publication in the Central Scientific Library of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (now V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine) by bibliographers Liliya Beliaeva and Lev Holdenberh. It is important to expound the structure, content of the manual, determine the reasons it hadn’t been published and distributed to the public. The methodology of the research is based on the implementation of historical and comparative methods of source analysis. The historical-typological method and the historical-chronological method are used. The scientific novelty is in the introduction into scientific circulation detailed information about this scientific and auxiliary bibliographic index for the first time. It was discovered that the compilers of the index conducted a thorough study of sources and carefully compiled a bibliographic index (a total of 6,205 records). It reflects the information on documents on Ukrainian literature, literary criticism and criticism published during the 1917-1970s. The index, professionally organized by the compilers, was recommended for publication by the Academic Council of the library, but it hadn’t been published for ideological reasons. The bibliographic records were found that contained information that the censorship authorities objected against the inclusion of the certain authors’ work (repressed writers and members of the nationalist opposition) in the index and, as a result, the entire index was removed from print. Conclusions. The studied manuscript of the index is a thorough scientific and bibliographic resource, which reflects multifacetedly and comprehensively the literary process in Ukraine, which hasn’t lost its scientific value. The bibliography should be advertised, digitized and made accessible for the users. The index is a necessary source for reproduction of the whole history of Ukrainian literature of the 20th century.
