The optimal below knee amputation flap
Abstract
The below knee amputation is a relatively common and simple procedure. Yet surprisingly, very little about the procedure is standardized. The current techniques utilized frequently result in flaccid flaps with significant dead space and excess skin or too short of a flap requiring revision. The outcomes that arise from these deformities delay wound healing and ultimate return to function for the patient.1 We describe a technique that is easily reproducible and results in a perfectly fitted flap. This technique has been adopted routinely in our practice, and has yielded consistent success.
