Risk factors and prevention of breast cancer were addressed in an intervention study to assess the existing level of knowledge after implementing an educational program on this topic in women between 20-64 years of age belonging to the Medical Office 57-1 of the Basic Working Group 2, of the Martha Abreu de Estevez University Polyclinic, municipality of Santa Clara, Villa Clara province, from January 2008 to December 2010. The universe was formed by 48 women and the study sample by 20. A simple random sampling was used. A questionnaire related to the topic was administered before and after the implementation of the designed program and the chi-square test and McNemar test were used with their statistical significance. All women expressed the need to know about the risk factors of breast cancer. Before the program was applied, 80% had insufficient knowledge and after the program sufficient knowledge was achieved in the 85%. It is concluded that the program was effective in educating women.
