Tornadoes, which are among the sudden natural disasters of meteorological origin, have caused loss of life and property in Turkey in recent years. They are difficult to predict because they happen in a short time. In studies where the synoptic conditions of tornado days were evaluated in detail, it was concluded that tornadoes formed under similar meteorological conditions. To reveal meteorological conditions caused tornadoes in Turkey, a synoptic pattern classification was made for tornado days, between 2000-2020. This classification is mainly based on the circulation type of the 500 hPa level and the location and direction of the trough and ridge axes in conjunction with the surface features. Accordingly, 520 tornado events and 408 tornado days in Turkey were examined and divided into 3 synoptic types: "Sharp Trough", "Spanning Trough" and "Closed System". Sharp troughs are the dominant synoptic type that produces the most tornadoes. Identifying synoptic models and their threat levels specific to tornado events in Turkey provides forecasters with a good idea of when and where to look for tornado development.
