Sociology of food, historically rooted in the sociology of family, has become more independent. The two corpus nowadays do not make full profit of what they have in common. This paper is a survey of the current research trends on family (inside and outside sociology) that may be of use for the sociology of food or be part of its research objects. Five trends are distinguished: the statistical approach based on socioprofesionnal status, the social psychology, the ethnographic studies on families, the studies at the intersection of family, childhood, adolescence and food, and the studies of the familial sources of the troubles in the nutritional behavior.
