Abstract

Public opinion often reduces the conflict between the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X founded by Marcel Lefebvre (1905-1991) and the Holy See to the problem of the Liturgy and the Latin Mass. The difficulties related to the return of the Fraternity to the Catholic Church, even if it was sustained by Pope Benedict XVI, show that the salient reasons for the conflict do not concern the liturgy, but the politics, as well as the notion of a confessional Catholic state for which Lefebvre’s heirs continue fighting against the teachings of the Second Vatican Council.This article aims to explore this conflict on the basis of interviews carried out with priests, members of the Fraternity, and an analysis of the correspondence between the Fraternity and the Holy See.
