This essay aims at reconstructing the works of Sara Copio Sullam, a Jewish intellectual who lived in Venice’s Ghetto during the first half of the 17th century, and who deserves consideration because of her endeavour at a represen- tation of her own self. What emerges from the few surviving works of poetry and prose of this fascinating woman-writer is a clear effort at defending and promot- ing her own ideals and the image of herself as a poet and intellectual against a segregating and male-oriented intellectual world. Through her works this woman of the past creates a stunning and up-to-date example of a self-reliant intellectual.
