I am honored by this prestigious award. It is especially meaningful to me because it is being presented by language professionals whom I respect and admire. The members of NCOLCTL are clearly among the most intelligent and capable people in the world. You are the experts who know and understand the challenges associated with language teaching and language learning. nd because of this educational deficiency, they have naïve perceptions about language. For instance, most of the general public believes that: – Every English word has an exact match in every other language – and vice versa. – Second language learning is simply a relexification process. – High levels of language competence can be attained in two years of school classes…or perhaps in a few weeks if a computer program is used.
