José Hipólito Unanue (1755-1833), a Peruvian journalist, scientist and politician actively contributed to the progress of journalism in his country, not only as an editor but also as its organizer, administrator and promoter. This article focuses upon the two journalistic roles played by this illuminated personality of the Peruvian history, from the passionate adventure of the Mercurio Peruano (1790-1795), a newspaper founded as an instrument of social transformation till the El Nuevo Día del Perú (1824) which became an authentic political weapon.
