Álvaro de Campos, sonetista

Abstract

Although most of Fernando Pessoa’s poetry attributed to Álvaro de Campos is in free verse, this Pessoan heteronym produced some sonnets of interest. This paper offers analytical readings of some of them, showing how a few are formally very close to the Petrarchan model, while others take varying degrees of formal liberty, with certain pieces even being classified as “quasi-sonnets.” Thus, the sonnet can be seen as a place of formal experimentation for Pessoa / Campos.
