War was a historical factor fully appropriated by Italian fascism. It was seen as the ultimate ordeal through which the «new man», imagined by the regime, had to go through in order to secure a glorious future for the fascist revolution. The outbreak of the war, in 1940, was therefore the moment of truth for the war culture advocated by the fascist power. And yet the setbacks and the Italian society’s gradual distancing from the regime showed the limits of the official views on war culture and, eventually, the political inability of fascism to create a « new man » who could face the challenge of the conflict.
