The use of randomized experiments for the evaluation of social programs has developed sharply over the last four years in France, especially regarding social programs aimed at young people. This method has become an essential tool to compute the impact of public programs on their beneficiaries. This article presents the basic principles and benefits of this method. However, it also has limits and requires precautions, in particular concerning its ethical aspects.
