This article deals with the microbiological aspect of the quality assessment of the Bodrog rever drainage surface waters. The microbiological parameters in Ondava, Topľa, Laborec and their tributaries were studied. The water quality in the sampled areas ranged between strongly polluted and very strongly polluted. The main cause of the pollution is the increased abundance of coliform and thermo-tolerant coliform bacteria. Main reason for the found increased abundance is: inadequately treated public sewage water, industrial waste water from sugar factory, agricultural distillery, foodstuff warehouse, lumberyard and city swimming pool water, all containing large amounts of organic compounds.
