The circular dichroism spectra of carbohydrate copper tetrammonia solutions allow to get valuable information about the configuration and conformation of sugars. The copper tetrammonia complexes of sugars with a single free 1,2-dihydroxy group of positive dihedral angle show from higher to lower wavelength Cotton effects with the sign sequence −+−; this pattern is reverse for ligands with negative dihedral angles. The most intense Cotton effects are shown for copper tetrammonia complexes of sugars with neighbored diol ligands whose dihedral angles have the same sign.
