Reproductive behavior of Artemiafranciscana (Kellogg, 1906) from San Quintín, Baja California, Mexico
Abstract
The reproductive behavior of two populations of Artemia is analyzed, one from San Quintín, Baja California, and the other from Yavaros, Sonora. In the interpopulation mating, altemating oviparous and ovoviviparous reproduction was observed, with the former dominating. In the San Quintín intrapopulation crossbreeding, 100% oviparous reproduction was observed. The intrapopulation fertility of Artemia from San Quintín was 75% and from Yavaros, 82.35%. In the interpopulation ♀Yav/♂SQ crossbreeding, fertility was 73.3%, and in the ♀SQ/♂Yav crossbreeding, 66%. It is concluded from these experiences that the population from San Quintín is Artemia franciscana, although some delay was observed in the mating time with the Yavaros population, which suggests the beginning of a specific differentiation.
