This paper evaluates the progress experienced by the rate of risk of poverty or social exclusion (Arope) in Spain during the recent period of economic crisis adopting a regional perspective. Using data from the Survey of Living Conditions, we calculate regional contributions to the growth of the population at risk of poverty or social exclusion between 2008 and 2012. Additionally, the evolution undergone by the Arope rate and its components is studied in the different Spanish regions. The analysis leads to the conclusion that regional disparities in poverty and social exclusion have not been particularly exacerbated by the crisis. However, most regions where the Arope rate values exhibited was lower than the national average in 2008, have reduced its favorable distances from such average; also being stated a worsening of the situation in the autonomous communities departing with the highest values of this indicator. In addition, we verify that the evolution of the Arope indicator for the different regions is explained in terms of the behavior of the poverty rate, being the variation the other two components: severe deficiency and low labor intensity of home equipment, not significant.
