The aim of this paper is to offer a brief overview of the teaching of the Italian language in public schools in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, and to reflect on the contributions of the linguistic perspectives connected with contemporary demands (postmodern critical theories, postcolonial theories, third wave sociolinguistics, and applied linguistics) for the teaching of languages in immigration contexts. We have concluded that the provision of the Italian language in the public schools of Santa Catarina went through a sharp reduction, and it is necessary to understand the processes of identification of the subjects with their inheritance languages for the planning of policies for the teaching of language.
