Possible constructional solutions for Diesel motors from the aspect of reduction of noise emission

Besides numerous improvements as to the emission of exhaust gases, increase in specific power, reduction in fuel consumption, application of alternative materials, fuels, etc., contemporary development of diesel engines is characterised also by the requests for reduction of noise emission. In principle, the approach to such a problem can be: by reducing the excitation, by changing the structural response, and by changing the acoustic protections. By means of tests carried out at IMR, dominant sources of noise of a high-speed diesel engine were established and on that basis possible design improvements and other solutions were given, with, a view to reducing noise emission.
