Abstract

Read online

The article deals with the problems translators might come across while translating metaphors. The author analyses semantic structure and the ways translators employ while translating metaphors in Shakespeare’s tragedy “Hamlet” from English into the Russian and Ossetian languages. Metaphors are considered in the context of their semantic structure, suggested by S.M. Mezenin. Merits of various ways of translating metaphors such as full translation, translation with lexical and morphological substitutions, as well as syntactical additions and omissions are considered.
