The research of silver-containing drugs’ effectiveness in the complex treatment in patients with chronic generalized catarrhal gingivitis
Abstract
Background. An urgent task of modern dentistry is to find alternative solutions for the treatment of patients with gingivitis who have limited opportunities to use antibacterial therapy due to the possible resistance of a number of microorganisms, allergic reactions, hepatotoxicity and other factors. In this regard, it seems rational to use in the complex therapy of chronic generalized catarrhal gingivitis silver-containing drugs that are highly effective against various gram-positive and gram-negative strains of bacteria, as well as showing viricidal and fungicidal activity, which makes it possible to sanitize the oral cavity from pathogenic and conditionally pathogenic microflora. The purpose of the study is to study the effectiveness of silver-containing drugs in the complex treatment of chronic generalized catarrhal gingivitis. Materials and methods. A study of the activity of enzymes of mixed saliva was conducted in order to study the effectiveness of the use of silvercontaining drugs in the complex treatment of patients with chronic generalized catarrhal gingivitis. 3 groups of patients of the first period of adulthood were studied. All patients, with the exception of the third group, were administered medications twice a day for 10 days. Patients of the first group were applied with Vitargol, patients of the second group with Argogel, patients of the third group (comparison group) were prescribed daily rinses with 0.05% solution of chlorhexidine bigluconate. 20 practically healthy individuals were also examined. The results of the study were processed by variational statistical methods using the Statistica for Windows v 10.0 software package. Results. Lactate dehydrogenase activity in patients with chronic generalized catarrhal gingivitis after treatment with the drug "Vitargol" decreased by 21.6% 6 months after treatment, with the use of the drug "Argogel" – by 36.2%, with the use of 0.05% chlorhexidine – by 31.5%. Aspartate aminotransferase activity decreased after the same observation period: when using Vitargol by 31%, when using Argogel – by 31.9%, when using 0.05% of chlorhexidine bigluconate – by 45.8%. Conclusion. The best results were obtained in the group with the use of antiseptic treatment with 0.05% chlorhexidine bigluconate, however, the silver-containing drugs Argogel and Vitargol, which have biocidal activity and contribute to the relief of the inflammatory process in the gum tissues, can serve as the drug of choice for maintenance therapy in patients with restrictions to antibacterial therapy.
